Overview of improvements in Fremont

The Fremont neighborhood is known as the “Center of the Universe” due to its lively culture, consisting of small businesses, a thriving art scene, the Fremont Sunday Market, and more. Travelers throughout the region visit this area through a wide variety of modes – from walking, rolling, biking, driving, or taking transit. As part of the project improvements, the project team finalized the neighborhood designs to increase transportation safety, mobility, and limit conflicts between different modes of transportation. The project team has worked with a wide range of community members to understand how the future of Fremont will be accessible for everyone walking, rolling, and/or commuting throughout the neighborhood and greater Seattle.

Improvements have been made on these blocks:

  • Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 35th St
  • Fremont Ave N between N 35th St and N 36th St
  • Fremont Pl N between Fremont Ave N and Evanston Ave N
  • N 36th St between Evanston Ave N and 1st Ave NW

Fremont Ave N overview

A plan view of the planned improvements for Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 36th St. A new northbound protected bike lane will be installed on Fremont Ave N. The existing bus stop for northbound Route 40 will move to Fremont Pl N. The existing bus stop for northbound routes 31, 32, and 62 will move to N 35 St. Throughout this area, SDOT will build new curb bulbs, bus bulbs, and upgrade the street between N 34th St and N 35th St.

An aerial graphic shows Fremont Avenue North between North thirty-fifth Street and North thirty-fourth Street. For northbound traffic, the proposed channelization (street layout) is as follows: the curbside lane will be a protected bicycle lane, the next lane will be general purpose with a “no right turn” sign, the northbound Route thirty one and thirty two and Route sixty-two bus stop will be relocated to North thirty-fifth Street and the northbound route forty bus stop will be relocated to westbound Fremont Place. For southbound traffic, the curbside lane will be a business access and transit lane.

Fremont Ave N between N 34th St and N 35th St is a major business hub for the Fremont neighborhood. This area is connected to Seattle by a wide variety of transportation options, including protected bike lanes on N 34th St, the multimodal Burke-Gilman Trail, and a number of Metro routes. Currently, the area is served by Routes 40, 31, 32, and 62. Our updated design has reconfigured the travel lanes and bus stops to better meet our goals of improving reliability and travel times for Route 40 in this area, as well as increasing safety for all travelers.

This intersection is a priority in all of our modal plans (i.e. Frequent Transit Network, the Bicycle Master Plan, the Freight Master Plan, and its designation as a Pedestrian Zone). The project is a unique opportunity to completely rebuild and redesign the block, upgrade the sidewalks, and balance the needs of all types of travelers. The updated design considers travel times, bus reliability, and safety in the Fremont neighborhood.

Why make these updates?

We are changing the street layout on this block to increase safety and access for people walking, biking, or rolling. By reconfiguring the street, a northbound protected bike lane can be added while maintaining all loading zones and some parking.

    • At this intersection, a new dedicated left-turn lane will be added for westbound traffic.
Why make these updates?
Why make these updates?

We have extended the sidewalk and added new curb bulb extensions to increase safety for people walking or rolling by reducing crossing distances and creating larger areas for people to wait before crossing the street. New bus bulbs will help improve transit travel times by allowing bus to make stops in the travel lane. This will get rid of the amount of time spent for buses waiting to reenter traffic.

  • Maintain one general purpose lane in each direction between 1st Ave N and Phinney Ave N
  • Add a new center turn lane between Phinney Ave NW and 1st Ave NW
    • Westbound traffic will be reduced to one general purpose travel lane to accommodate the new center turn lane. After 1st Ave NW, there will be two general purpose lanes for westbound traffic.
Why make these updates?
Why make these updates?

Adding new curb bulbs enhances the comfort and safety for people walking or rolling by reducing the crossing distances in intersections. Widening the sidewalk creates larger areas for people to travel, encouraging people to walk along the street and visit shops. New bus bulbs improve bus travel times because buses stop in the travel lane, reducing the amount of time spent waiting to reenter traffic. A similar design is used on Dexter Ave N where Route 62 currently travels.

A center turn lane between 1st Ave NW and Phinney Ave NW increases safety by shifting people making turns into their own lane until an opening in traffic flow is available.
